SB 79: LEGALIZE MORE HOMES NEAR TRANSIT!

TL;DR

Senate Bill 79 will make it faster and easier to build multi-family housing near transit stops and will help address the housing affordability and availability crisis in California. These next few weeks will be decisive for SB 79 and opposition is mobilizing!

What You Need to Know

It should not cost more than a million dollars to live near a BART station or a Metro Rail station – but in many parts of the Bay Area and Southern California, it does.

Many CA cities still ban multifamily homes from being built near train stations and bus rapid transit stops.

SB 79 would help get more homes built near transit, including in areas that currently prohibit new homes. It does that by allowing for streamlined upzoning near certain rail stations and certain bus rapid transit lines. It will help address housing affordability by increasing the supply of homes in these areas, while also increasing transit use – and the funding stability of public transportation systems.

SB 79 has been through a series of close votes on the Senate floor and committee rooms, and the final vote in the General Assembly is expected soon.
